The Healthy Frappuccino: Pumpkin Spice Edition

IMG_7579

I just finished a hot and muggy run today and was debating spending money at Starbucks, but also craving my coffee smoothie. But it’s September now, so I can’t just have any coffee smoothie, but the fall version. I have some pumpkin spice protein powder, so I coupled that with cold brew pumpkin spice coffee and a bit of pumpkin pie spice. (Let’s see how many more times I can say “pumpkin pie spice” in one sentence.) They’re all blended together into the perfect Starbucks copycat Healthy Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino.

You Won’t Even Know There’s Cauliflower in This Smoothie

IMG_7220.JPG

Don’t hate it until you try it: Raspberry Açai Cauliflower Smoothie. I’m a sucker for trying new food items, especially when I see these unsweetened açai purée packets continually pop up on multiple nutritionist recommended grocery lists. Açai (“ah-sigh-EE” but don’t even ask me to correctly pronounce this; I still butcher the name) is chuck full of nutrients and antioxidants due to its deep purple color — similar to blueberries and blackberries. Look for unsweetened packets in the freezer section making them easy to store and easy to have on hand. You can find them at Trader Joe’s for $4.49 or Whole Foods for $6.99 (at least that’s what it’s going for in Boston proper aka Beacon Hill). Since the purée packets are unsweetened, I added banana and frozen pineapple for some natural sugar. Frozen cauliflower adds nutrients and texture, and you can’t even tell there’s cauliflower in this thing.

Just a Little Coffeeeeee Buzzzzzz

IMG_6995.JPG

I recently ordered a cold brew infuser from Amazon. Over 1,300 people recommended it and it has not disappointed. The coffee is strong and perfectly cold brewed. Plus, it’s easy to use and store. I’ve made this coffee smoothie before using chilled coffee brewed in a traditional way. Using cold brew was so much better; it’s stronger, darker and maintains that classic bitter coffee taste in this Healthy Coffee Frappuccino. At Starbucks, the Grande (16 oz) Coffee or Coffee Light Frappuccinos contains 23-50 g of sugar (whaaaaat!?). This version is naturally sweetened with frozen bananas and a dash of agave. It’s frosty, tasty and satisfies your iced coffee cravings!

Orange You Glad You Found this Orange Smoothie

IMG_6546.JPG

Goooooood morning and happy July! Wake up with the randomly delicious combo of an Orange Avocado Mango Smoothie.  The avocado is creamy and adds a natural thickness to the smoothie. The mango adds sweetness, along with the orange, also tossing in a little vitamin C and natural juice. As breakfast or as a snack, it all perfectly blends together into a decidedly different smoothie from your usually berries and banana.

Lusciously Refreshing Layered Smoothie

IMG_3158

Yesterday, Boston was 90ºF and muggy. Not in the mood for a hot, complicated breakfast? Neither was I. This take a little planning to make the chia pudding ahead of time, but all in all, it’s a quick, easy and definitely refreshing meal. Pineapple, raspberries and watermelon are all in season, so perfect timing to buying bulk and freeze. Packed with vitamin C, this thirst-quenching Layered Chia Smoothie refuels, cools and hits the spot.

Brilliant Smoothie Breakfast Bowls

IMG_2591

I thought it was strange to put ground cinnamon and vanilla extract in smoothie, but Real Simple must be doing something right. Sorry I ever doubted you, RS.  Both enhanced the natural tart sweetness of the raspberries. I tried this two ways: first, as a bowl (hence the Raspberry Kiwi Smoothie Bowl) and  secondly, as a smoothie. I followed the smoothie recipe twice more and added some protein powder for a heartier breakfast the next few mornings. Stored the pre-made smoothies in Mason jars and I have breakfast on the go. Not only tasty, but the color is gorgeous! The smoothie bowl was the perfect under-the-weather treat.

Bring on the Breakfast “Greens”

IMG_2381.JPG

BuzzFeed is brilliant. I’m talking life hacks brilliant that are so painfully simple, they should’ve been obvious — like make not just one, but multiple smoothies at once to only have to clean your blender one time. AND when you clean the blender, fill it up with a third with warm water and a couple drops of dish soap and “blend” until foamy and clean. (Obviously you’ll need to rinse out the blender after.) AND you have breakfast taken care of for the week. I also tried and tweaked their version of a green breakfast smoothie and made my Banana Mango Green Smoothie. I definitely made three ahead of time to have for breakfast that week. Not skimping on protein, the Greek yogurt and Aloha’s plant-based protein jump in here to keep you full and satisfied. The kale was nonexistent because all you tasted was banana and mango. Winning? I think so.

Let’s Get Tropical: Plant-Based Protein Smoothie

Tropical Protein Smoothie

I don’t normally like nor use protein powder. I think it tastes chalky and artificial. Aloha sent their new plant-based vanilla protein powder to try. Let’s break it down: 18 g of plant-based protein per packet, 175 calories, low in saturated fat, still TWO servings of fruit and veggies and packed with taste — none of that chalky consistency. Last weekend, the temperature easily pushed high 80s, low 90s in Boston. Throw in a run in that muggy weather and the idea of this smoothie is what got me through my run. Also, how can you not try this when it looks like you’re sipping on a tropical ice cream? Blend frozen bananas, frozen mango, almond milk and Aloha’s vanilla protein, and this Tropical Protein Smoothie was hands down one of the best smoothies I’ve ever had.

The Creamiest & “Smoothiest” Smoothie

Creamy Avocado Raspberry Smoothie

Yummmm. Literally yum. That’s all I have. I made this when I was fighting off strep and it was beyond delicious. The vitamin C and antioxidants from the raspberries were just what I needed paired with some of Aloha‘s Daily Good Berry Blend for a superfood boost. You can’t beat the creamy, smooth consistency that the avocado (yes — avocado in a smoothie!!), bananas and unsweetened cashew milk offer. It’s like taking a sip of smoothie heaven. You’d think you’re sipping a heavy cream-based ice cream milkshake and not the superfood-dense Creamy Avocado Raspberry Smoothie.

A Tropical Paradise Smoothie

Mango Banana

I just came back from a long weekend on Sanibel Island in Florida. Known for its abundance of shells, Sanibel was a much needed breath of warm weather after the snowiest (and one of the coldest) winters in Boston. I met my parents and family friends there, and my mom had bought honey mangos for the stay. They’re deliciously sweet and rich in vitamin C. The mangos was just begging to be transformed in a smoothie. Given most days were muggy and in the high 80’s, low 90’s, it was only fitting to make a Mango Banana “Green” Smoothie. Bananas, strawberries, spinach and a dose of Aloha‘s 14 superfoods, this smoothies was better than expected. One sip and hopefully you’ll channel some beach vibes like the pictures below of Sanibel and be transported to your own tropical paradise.
